Prithviraj: No Time for Tamil

Prithviraj has no dates for a role in the Tamil remake of the Malayalam superhit Traffic

He's not been seen on Kollywood screens since Mani Ratnam's Raavanan. And it looks like Kollywood will have to wait longer for Prithviraj to be part of another Tamil film. The actor recently had to refuse a role in the Tamil remake of the Malayalam superhit Traffic.

The actor was approached by maker Rajesh Pillai, who will be wielding the megaphone for this remake as well. A source from the team tells us, "The film, which is being produced by Radhika Sarath Kumar, has a host of interesting actors. The maker, who has retained Remya Nambeesan from the original cast, wanted to have another familiar face from Malayalam cinema and was banking on Prithviraj to say yes as he's popular in Tamil Nadu too."

But, Prithviraj doesn't seem to have the required dates as he is busy with his Bollywood debut, Ayya. Additionally, he also has nearly half a dozen Malayalam projects, which rule out his being part of the film. When contacted, he said, "I've been offered the film, but will not be able to be a part of it owing to my dates or the lack of it."

No Duplicate for These Stunts

Mollywood actor Prithviraj is currently shooting for Hero - a film wherein he plays the role of the duplicate who is usually called in to do stunts for the real life hero on the sets.

"The film is about the man who actually risks his life by doing all those stunts that we see lead actors doing on the big screen. It happens to be a story that I feel strongly about too. I recall noticing a leading stunt guy who was making a last minute call to his wife while he was seated behind the wheel, just before he performed one of the most daring stunts of his career. He was, in fact, filling in as my duplicate in that film. Just imagining what the guy must have gone through, calling a loved one - just in case he does not make it through alive, still gives me the shivers," says Prithviraj.

The actor's current film, Hero, requires him to do a variety of stunts. "I have decided not to use a duplicate for this film. It would be most ridiculous to have a duplicate to play the duplicate that I am required to play," Prithviraj points out.

Prithviraj at Kochi Times

The media plays an important role in Prithviraj’s life. Apart from the fact that the celebrity is oft written about, he is also married to a former scribe. Yet, the star takes us by surprise when he mentions that as a producer, he is a bit scared of the media. “That’s the reason why we do not organise movie premieres here. As a producer, I am worried about the wrong kind of publicity going out to the audience even before its release,” he reveals.

The actor also informs us that he has stayed away from reading film magazines and film columns on print till date. “Because journalists tend to attribute their quotes to ‘sources’. Seriously… who are these sources? I think it would give a story more credibility if the journalist would take the trouble to check with the person who is being written about. Most of the time, journalists have direct access to film personalities. Readers always want first-hand information.” Point noted.

Prithviraj also mentions that he is looking forward to the paper’s Kerala edition. “I enjoy reading the paper during my travel to other cities. It’s high time we had something like it in Kerala,” he says.

While in the newsroom, the actor took on all the questions thrown at him by the team and answered them quite as a matter of fact. Here are excerpts…

People consider you to be too outspoken and in-your-face at times. Is it not a part of an actor’s job to be as politically correct as possible?
Believe me, I did try to be politically correct. But I failed. I say things as they are because I do not know another way to put it across. If people consider that to be a virtue, then it is. If not, then it’s too bad.

How do you deal with criticism?
Constructive criticism is much appreciated. I was never brought up to be a part of films. Acting happened to me by accident. I have made my share of mistakes, but I have learnt on the job. I don’t mind if people do not relate to me as an individual. As long as they can relate to the characters I play onscreen, I am happy. Off screen, I am just a usual 29-year-old. The only difference is that I have a job that requires me to be in the public eye.

At the Kochi Times office to be a part of the launch, we invited actor Prithviraj to interact with the team as we put together the first edition of Kochi Times — Kerala’s first real entertainment and lifestyle newspaper. The young star, who already has over 75 films to his credit, was the obvious choice to be our guest for day one. He’s smart, suave and sexy — qualities that are very much in sync with the spirit of this newspaper.

Has the Malayalam film industry opened up to newcomers of late?
Yes. It is also opening up to new ideas and experiments. There are new people in all departments of filmmaking and the change that it has brought about is there for all to see. The last one-and-a-half-years has seen an upsurge in the kind of content oriented films that have been released here.

Was it comparatively difficult for you to break in as a newcomer?
I have done over 75 films now, but I am still considered to be a newcomer. That’s not surprising if you compare the number of years and good work put in by some of our seniors in the film industry. Compared to that, I am still a newbie.

What will bring about a positive change for the entertainment industry in Kerala?
I believe that Kerala is very much in need of a parallel multiplex culture; that can open its doors to screen small budget films to a smaller audience, yet have repeated shows. The industry has already seen a new trend — the audience has lapped up some of the recently released small budgeted films that are high on content. People have realised that it is the story that is most important. And that is the only way forward.

Do you take time off to interact with fans?
Yes. In fact, I am one among the most accessible actors here, as far as fans are concerned. On the sets each day, I have anywhere between 100 to 500 fans that land up, wanting to click pictures, take autographs or sometimes just share a cake with me. I oblige always. I remember, I came across the Prithviraj Fans Association when I had gone to the theatre to watch my second film — I saw some of these banners outside the theatre and was absolutely thrilled to discover I had a fan’s association. The association has grown since then. Today, it is a registered company through which I continue to do the little charity work that I am involved with.

Is working for films in other languages any different from working in the Malayalam film industry?
The only major difference is that, in the Malayalam film industry, we set the date of release of a film before we begin shooting it, and then work towards the deadline. In Bollywood, for instance, there are no such deadlines. All focus is on the creative aspect of filmmaking — irrespective of how long it takes to get it right.

Prithvi’s Nanban Ready for Second Innings

Ignoring the sprained neck that he got on the sets, Kollywood actor Srikanth seems to be enthusiastic about his role in the upcoming Mollywood movie,Hero.

Although his debut Mollywood movie, Uppukandam Brothers flopped at the box office, the actor is making a comeback via Deepan’s Hero.

“It was an obligation to take up Uppukandam Brothers, I wasn’t happy with the movie, but I considered it a learning process. Look at me now, I am a lot more confident and I am able to improvise in Hero, which is a movie within a movie.”

This is the third time that the actor will be seen with Mollywood star Prithviraj. The duo came together in the Kollywood movie, Kana Kandaen, Tollywood movie Police Police and will be seen together in Hero as well.

“I approached Prithiviraj for the Telugu movie he agreed to act without a second thought so for Hero I just went ahead when Prithvi asked me,” said the actor. Srikanth who shares a good rapport with co-star Prithviraj, feels that Prithviraj is growing in the industry by leaps and bounds.

“I saw him in his first Telugu movie, then in his first Tamil movie and he has certainly undergone a major transition. Prithvi knows the art of cinema, he is focussed and if you ask me who will be the leading light of the Mollywood industry in future — I would say it’s going to be him.”

The multi-starrer Nanban, a remake of 3 Idiots was a turning point for the star. He says, “I was blessed to get a call from Shankar sir as it was always my dream to work with him.”

Srikanth who plays Madhavan’s role in Nanban says, “Maddy is a versatile actor, I wanted to present my own version and didn’t want to get influenced by the star at all. Shankar sir took this as a challenge, butNanban is a movie that has mass appeal unlike 3 Idiots.’’

Playing the role of Venkat Ramakrishnan in Nanban, a completely fresh Srikanth can be seen in the movie.

The star had to shed extra kilos as well as gain weight for his role in the movie. “It was a major transition for me; I had to lose weight in 20 days as well as gain weight in the next 20!”

It was director Anurag Kashyap who liked my film Gandh, so we decided to work together. Rani Mukerji was always the first choice for this film. I had approached her when she was doing No One Killed Jessica and when I narrated the script to her, she agreed to do it. She is very hard-working, committed, disciplined and respects other people’s time. Working with her was a great experience. Although the overall experience was exhausting, it was positive for a debutant director like me. Rani and I shared a great equation.

Meghana Raj shines in Mollywood

The Uyarthiru 420 heroine, Meghana Raj, still has at least two pending releases in Tamil - Kallasirippu Azhaga and Nandha Nandhitha, and the indeed long-time pending Krishnaleelai.

However, the actress, who is currently testing waters in Mollywood with four projects in hand, including one with actor Prithviraj says, "I had a good release in Malayalam, with good feedback on my role in particular. 'Beautiful' was regarded as one the cult releases in Mollywood."

"Presently, my projects in Malayalam are a film with Indrajith, titled Mullamottum Munthirichaarum, a film with actor Prithiviraj, then one with Anup Menon and one film with Lal. These are the four projects I am doing in Mollywood. But I am open to doing good films in any language."

"Considering the fact that I am getting to play the lead in all the films I am doing, I would be choosy about my scripts, depending upon the significance of my role in the film," she adds.

Prithviraj, who has not been in the limelight for quite sometime, is now back in action...and back with a smile too!

Though Prithviraj is one of the finest actors in the Malayalam film industry, he has become more popular for his outspoken and rash comments on people. Now, all that's old story.

Though Indian Rupee did well at the box office, it did not grab too many eyeballs. However, Prithviraj has his hands full this year. The actor has just finished shooting for Johnny Antony’s Masters and Dr Biju’s Akashathinte Niram, in which he will be doing a special appearance.

On A Joy Ride

Amal Neerad's ‘Bachelor Party' is about a group of friends who decide to go on a journey together.

The camera is trained on a group of stern-looking men inside a movie theatre. Smoke and lights enhance the dramatic effect. The men are directed to glance at the door. The scene seems to be a build up for a heavy duty action sequence for Amal Neerad's latest film, ‘Bachelor Party,' the shooting of which is on at Ezhupunna.

“‘Bachelor Party' is about a group of friends who undertake a journey together. There are a couple of flashbacks and the story unfolds in a span of three days. Some long lost bonds are rekindled and new friendships blossom. The story unravels during the journey, but it can't be termed a ‘road movie,'” says Amal, the young Turk of Mollywood who has directed films such as ‘Big B,' ‘Sagar Alias Jacky Reloaded' and ‘Anwar.' His films got the attention of young viewers who were enchanted by the sumptuous visuals and slick narratives.

Behind the camera

Apart from producing ‘Bachelor Party,' Amal will be handling the camera for the movie as well. “It has been a while since I wielded a camera for a movie. Friends of mine – Sameer Thahir, Shyju Khaled, Jomon T. John, and Satheesh Kurup – who assisted me during ‘Big B,' are now well-known cinematographers in Mollywood. This is sort of a healthy competition with them, a competition in which I would have no hassles even if I were to lose it,” he smiles.

There are rumours that the storyline of ‘Bachelor Party' is similar to that of the Hollywood blockbuster ‘Hangover.' But when Amal is asked about it, his reply is a smirk.

Tony (Asif Ali), Geevar (Indrajith), Benny (Rahman), Ayyappan (Kalabhavan Mani), Fakeer (Vinayakan), and Neethu (Nithya Menen) are the main characters in the story. Prithviraj does a cameo in the movie.

Multi-starrer

According to Amal, roping in stars for a multi-starrer wasn't a problem. “They are not bothered about their stardom. They like the evolution of the characters they are playing in the movie. There is some madness about this storyline and that attracted us to this script written by Unni R. and Santhosh Echikkanam,” he says.

The artistes are ready to face the camera and the camaraderie is evident as the crew prepares for the next shot. Indrajith says he plays a bold and jovial character, while Asif, who sports a goatee and a ponytail, says his character is unemployed, the youngest in the group, and is prone to get into trouble.

According to Rahman, it is the way human relations are handled in the movie that has persuaded him to play a role in the flick.

John Vijay, who shot into fame with Tamil films such as ‘Oram Po,' ‘Raavanan,' and ‘Mouna Guru,' makes his entry into Malayalam. Remya Nambeeshan and Jinu Joseph are in the cast.

‘Bachelor Party' is being produced under the banner of Amal Neerad Productions. Lyrics by Rafeeq Ahmad have been composed by Rahul Raj.

Ramu Karyat Film Awards Announced

The Ramu Karyat Film Awards for the year 2011 were declared here on Wednesday.

‘Urumi’, directed by Santhosh Sivan, was elected the best film, while ‘Chappa Kurisu’ directed by Sameer Thahir bagged the second best film award. Prithviraj is the best actor for his performances in ‘Urumi’ and ‘Indian Rupee’. Kavya Madhavan won the best actress award for her performance in ‘Khaddama’.

The award ceremony is being held in connection with Natika Beach festival,which will be held from February 5 to 12. The awards will be distributed on February 12.

Director Siddique, (chairman of the Ramu Karyat award jury), Geetha Gopi MLA (chairman of Nattika Beach Festival), Anil Pulikkal and C M Noushad also spoke.

Srikanth, the 'Nanban' of 'Hero'

Remember Prithviraj did a powerful role in 'Kana Kanden', which had Srikanth in the lead. Now the latter is doing the same to his good friend, by acting in an important character in a Malayalam film titled 'Hero', which has Prithiviraj as protagonist.

Confirming this, Srikanth says, "Prithviraj and I are close pals for a long time and he is always ready to share the screen space with me. So I immediately said yes when I was approached to be part of Malayalam movie Hero."

Srikanth was shooting for 'Hero' since Monday and the actor will be in Kochi for the next couple of weeks, to complete the task. "It is an interesting role and am so happy to work with my nice friend Prithviraj," adds the actor.

On his recent release 'Nanban' getting rave reviews besides making good collections, Srikanth says, "Though I was not in Chennai during the release day (He was in Dubai to play star cricket), I was constantly in touch with people here to know the result. I am thrilled to know that the film has been declared a super hit."

Contrary to what has appeared in a section of the media, I haven't replaced Prithviraj in ‘Mumbai Police' and he has not opted out of it. We have launched the project with him in the lead and we will start working on the dates after the release of ‘Casanovva.' Prithviraj and I share a great friendship and he was in fact the first person to text me saying how much he loved the trailer of ‘Casanovva.' Talking about ‘Mumbai Police,' the rights of the film has already been sold in four languages and that's even before scenarists Bobby and Sanjay completed the script! A big star outside Malayalam has shown interest in working in ‘Mumbai Police.' It can also be made with fresh faces in the lead, but Prithviraj certainly remains our first priority.

Rani to pay tribute to Sridevi, Madhuri and Juhi in Aiyya! Juhi Responds!

After pictures of Rani Mukerji emerged dressed very similar to Sridevi in Chaalbaaz, rumours were rife on whether Rani would be paying tribute to the actress.

The news now, is that Rani will be playing tribute to not only Sridevi, but also Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla.
Rani will be seen dressing up as the 3 actresses in a medley type song for Aiyya!

The song will be choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant who is Ranis best friend. They have recently worked together on Dil Bole Hadippa. The styling will be done by Neeta Lulla who has replicated the most minute detail of each outfit. Rani herself has helped to shortlist the three songs.

Rani will be dancing along to Tu Tu Taara from Bol Radha Bol, Ek Do Teen from Tehzaab and Na Jaane Kahan Se from Chaalbaaz.

Commenting on the song, Sachin- the director of the film confirmed, “This is a personal tribute to Sri, Mads and Juhi. They are people we both adore and whose films we have grown up watching. It's a dream sequence which Rani and I are very excited about. We both can’t wait to show Aiyya to all the three ladies.”

JUHI CHAWLA: "I recently read about it. She will recreate one of my favourites Tu Tu Tu Tara from my film Bol Radha Bol. I have full faith in her. I believe, she will do better than me," she said.

It was reported in the media sometime back that director Rosshan Andrrews had thrown his hero Prithviraj out of his forthcoming venture, Mumbai Police.

He vehemently denies it now and blames it on, who else, but the media.

According to him, he was busy with Casanovva and Prithviraj was busy with his own projects. That was the reason why Mumbai Police got delayed.

“We are still in regular contact and if he is available, after the release of Casanovva, we will start shooting the film with him,” says Rosshan.

The high profile director had launched the film at a gala function in Kochi more than a year back.

But things never worked out as both the director and the hero were busy with their own projects. Bobby and Sanjay are writing the script for Mumbai Police.

'Kochadaiyaan' goes on floors on January 19

Superstar's much-awaited 'Kochadaiyaan' will go on floors on January 19, an auspicious day. The shooting will commence in the AVM Pillayar temple and scenes featuring the Superstar and his sister played by Sneha will be canned first.

The film is produced and directed by Rajini's daughter, Soundarya Ashwin and will have music by Isai Puyal AR Rahman. KS Ravikumar is also helping Soundarya with the direction.

A little birdie tells us that Aadhi who is eagerly awaiting his 'Aravaan' will also be seen in a pivotal role in this movie. However we can't be sure of this and an official announcement from the makers listing the cast and crew is expected shortly. Prithviraj and Lakshmi Manchu are also touted to play pivitol roles in this film.

Rajini will be seen in the titular role, as a king who is an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva and one with long tresses.

The releasing date of Anurag Kashyap's 'Aiyya' has been confirmed. Trade analyst and film critic Tran Adarsh tweeted that the film is scheduled to be released on September 28, 2012. He tweets,"Viacom18's co-production with @ankash1009 titled 'Aiyya!', starring Rani Mukherjee, confirmed for release on 28 September."

Kerala Strikers, which makes its debut in the Celebrity Cricket League, launches its signature video.

Cricket is a unifier and the film stars have realised this. The Celebrity Cricket League (CCL), the stars believe, is a perfect platform to reunite the Indian film industry. The second edition of CCL, which kick starts in Sharjah on January 13 with a match between Mumbai Heroes and Telugu Warriors, will also travel to Kochi this season.

Last season the league had four teams. This year the competition turns tougher with the entry of Kerala Strikers and Bengal Tigers. The Kerala side is promoted by Mohanlal, who will also lead the side, Lissie Priyadarshan and Shaji P.M. and Bengal Tigers, is owned by filmmaker Boney Kapoor and actress-wife Sridevi.

The signature video of Kerala Strikers was launched by Prithviraj and Sreesanth at a function held in the city recently. The music video is by A. L. Vijay that has lyrics by G. S. Arun and pulsating music by Sanjeev Thomas. The official website (www.cclt20.in) was also unveiled by actor-producer Thyagarajan.

The Kerala side will include a bunch of young actors like Indrajit, Prthiviraj, Kunchacko Boban, Saiju Kurup, Bala, Vinu Mohan, Asif Ali, Rajiv Pillai, Riyaz Khan, Unni Mukundan etc. Former cricketers D. Chandrasenan Nair and Sunil are the team's coach and assistant coach respectively. Edavela Babu, secretary AMMA, is the manager.

The CCL is expected to rope in teams from the Punjab, Marathi, Bhojpuri and Gujarati film industry in the coming years. “This is a great platform for bringing together directors, producers and actors. This will open new opportunities for our young actors,” said Edavela Babu.

Kerala Strikers make their CCL debut on January 21 against Chennai Rhinos at Hyderabad. On January 22, two matches will be played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Bengal Tigers will play Chennai Rhinos and Kerala Strikers take on Mumbai Heroes.

The tournament played on Twenty20 format has six teams: Mumbai Heroes, Chennai Rhinos, Telugu Warriors, Karnataka Bulldozers, Kerala Strikers and Bengal Tigers.

2011 has been a mixed bag of few good films, and far too many not-so-good ones. Small films with young heroes which were genuinely engaging, worked at the box-office, earning money for its producers.

The economics in Malayalam film industry are often baffling. Most of the biggies ended up as huge losses but still, almost everyone is busy launching new projects! The trade figures rarely get published and there are no real analysis on the hits, the misses and the reasons. It was a year when the superstars got the drubbing at the box office and new experiments got welcomed by the viewers.

Indian Rupee: Director Ranjith reportedly told his lead actor to “get out of shape and preferably develop a paunch” to play a small time real estate broker named JP. Thilakan and Jagathy Sreekumar came up with powerhouse performances and the viewers were evidently delighted.

Veetilekkulla Vazhi: Dr. Biju's film that was splendidly shot on the vast expanses of Ladakh, had a valid statement to make on terrorism and the human lives that are caught in its fold and bruised beyond repair. M. J Radhakrishnan's National Award winning cinematography did add up considerably to the grandeur of the film.

Indian Rupee: Ranjith continued to surprise us again in 2011 as well. After the charming 'Pranchiyettan and the Saint' last year, this new-age director who refuses to walk along much trodden paths, took us into the life of a petty real estate broker this time. We loved Indian Rupee. Every bit of it.

City of God: Lijo Jose Pellissery's second film after the much acclaimed 'Nayakan' did not obviously find many viewers and the film sank without a trace at the box office. Yet, the young director's flair for creating cinema of a distinctly different kind cannot be ignored in a hurry.

Urumi: Santhosh Sivan's period drama that had Prithviraj playing 'the boy who wanted to kill Vasco Da Gama' was spectacular visually, and Shankar Ramakrishnan's script added the much needed zing to it. Urumi was a commercial and critical success and a new production house August Cinema was born along with it.

MALAYALAM FILMDOM’S HEARTTHROB Prithviraj was all praise for co-star Rani Mukherji in the Anurag Kashyap-produced Hindi film Aiyaa.

“She is an extremely talented and beautiful person. Now she is a good friend,” said the actor, who flew to Dubai from the shooting locale in Pune to inaugurate the Kalyan Silks Showroom in Karama. A huge crowd had gathered in and around the showroom to catch a glimpse of the charismatic young actor, who flew back just hours after the event.

“Work for the film is almost complete,” said Prithviraj, who plays a painter in this quirky love story, with Rani playing his love interest.

When asked whether he feared a lukewarm response from the Hindi film audience, considering that most of the South Indian actors have had a very short innings in Bollywood, the 29-year-old came up with a very level-headed response.

“I don’t see this film as my grand entry into Hindi films. I am doing it because I liked the script,” said the actor.

He expressed confidence in the film’s director Sachin Kundalkar, who has won two National Awards for his Marathi films. Kundalkar is making his Bollywood debut with Aiyaa. The entire film has been shot in Pune.

Unlike his seniors in the Malayalam film industry, Prithiviraj forayed into film production early in his career and has co-produced two hit films in Malayalam — Urumi and Indian Rupee. The former was one of the most expensive films in Malayalam and featured Bollywood actresses Tabu, Vidya Balan and Genelia D’souza. He has shown an uncanny understanding of the audience’s pulse and is known for experimenting by picking up scripts that interest him.

Besides Malaylam films he has acted in Tamil and Telugu films as well. He played Aishwarya Rai’s husband in the Tamil version of Mani Ratnam’s Raavan (a part that was played by Tamil superstar Vikram in the Hindi version). Prithviraj received many offers from Bollywood producers, but turned them down and instead opted for Kundalkar’s film.

Getting the right Hindi pronunciation is often a major problem for South Indian actors, but Prithviraj has mentioned in many television interviews that he is extremely comfortable in the language as he has many North Indian friends with whom he converses regularly. He is also known to do his dance sequences with aplomb, a skill that would stand him in good stead in Hindi films. Although action is his forte, of late he has shown a yen for romance and comedy.

However, Prithviraj fans will have to wait with bated breath till Aiyaa is released and declared a hit. Then maybe co-star Rani Mukherji too will have something to silence the critics who have written her off.

Prithviraj is going to play a priest in debutant directors Jekson and Reckson Antony`s all new comedy entertainer Louis VI, based on a script written by Babu Janardhanan.

Prithviraj after the Teja Bhai debacle is once again trying his hand at comedy. He will act as a person who is forced to join a seminary and becomes a priest on the request of his parents. He plays the reluctant Louis in the film, who was born after many years of prayers and so his parents vowed to God to make him a priest to serve god.

Louis VI`s script made Prithviraj laugh so much that he readily agreed to do the film to be directed by former associates of director Thampi Kannamthanam.

The cast of the film produced by Biji John and Santhosh Mathai under Cinema Movies banner, is yet to be finalised. The shooting is expected to start next year after Prithvi, completes Ayya his Bollywood film with Rani Mukherjee.

South Indian hotties, Trisha, Shriya Sharan and Amala Paul, were all umoured to be in the reckoning but they all apparently didn’t want to give dates in bulk for the movie which will be shot in a single schedule.

Yami Gautam is a popular face in the television industry. Scripted by Vinod Guruvayoor, the film will also feature Sreekanth, Bala, Thalaivasal Vijay and Nedumudi Venu.

Urumi — A Visual Extravaganza

Urumi is one of those well crafted films that you rarely ever see in Malayalam. As the tall and sturdy Krishnadas (KD) and as the gallant and fearless Chirakkal Kelu Nair, Prithviraj has made an entry to several hearts through the fictional yarn, which illustrates the epic tale of a man whose mission was to kill the Viceroy of Portuguese Empire in India, Vasco da Gama. Well crafted and beautifully scripted, the story is told in two generations, one, the modern day generation who are oblivious of their history, and the other, personalities from the past who fought bravely for their land.

The film is a perfect blend. With an ideal cast, riveting cinematography, tight editing, solid script and top notch direction, no wonder the film made its way to the Indian Panorama section of International Film Festival of India. It will be shown here in the World Cinema Section of the International Film Festival of Kerala.

At a time when historical movies barely ever happen in Mollywood, Santhosh Sivan has shown immense courage to come up with a big budget period movie involving a huge star cast which includes Prabhudeva who played Vayyali, Nithya Menon who woos the audience with her flirtatious role as Chirakkal Bala, Genelia D'Souza (as Arackal Ayesha), who made a decent debut in Malayalam, and Arya as Thankachan and Chirakkal Kothuwal. Jagathy Sreekumar, as usual, has succeeded in immortalising the character of the effeminate villain Chenichery Kurup. Other noteworthy performances come from the visiting actors, Robin Pratt (as Vasco da Gama), Alexx O’Nell (Estêvão da Gama), Amole Gupte (Chirakkal Thampuran) and Ankur Khanna (Chirakkal Bhanu Vikraman). Santhosh Sivan merged Greek mythology into a traditional deity with Vidhya Balan’s character Makkom, which the normal audience might find quite confusing and mysterious.

Santhosh Sivan, known for his charismatic cinematography excels in direction and has done perfect justice to the script penned by Shankar Ramakrishnan, who had earlier impressed the audience and critics equally with his Island Express. Editing by the National Award winning Sreekar Prasad is slick, and music by Deepak Dev is engaging and suits brilliantly with the mood of the movie.

Kerala Flavour in Latam’s Indian Film Fest

The first ever Indian film festival in Latin America will open with a Malayalam movie. Director Renjith's Prithviraj-starrer Indian Rupee would be the inaugural movie at the Bhava International Indian Film Festival which will begin on December 5 in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. The 25 day festival, 'Bhava, universo de cinema Indian' (universe of Indian cinema), would feature 35 films from various Indian languages.

"We hope that this film festival probably opens up a new path to a deeper cultural interaction between India and Brazil," said the main curator of Bhava, Jyothi Das.

The film festival organized by Tantri Arte, an agency based in Brasilia, with the support of the Brazilian government and the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) took three years in the making as Das wanted to show Indian cinema beyond Bollywood. "For many in Latin America, India is all about Bollywood and raunchy item dances, which is not true and thus this effort to bring in carefully selected movies from many Indian languages," he said.

Adoor Gopalakrishnan's Naalu Pennungal, Priyadarshan's Kancheevaram, Girish Kasaravalli's Gulabi Talkies, Gautam Ghosh's Manur Manush and Seema Vishwas' Hath are some of the selected films. Tantri Arte, which focuses on promotion of Indian forms of art in Brazil, will organize two more festivals with the same package in Sao Paulo and Brazil.

Kochadayaan seems to be going bigger and bigger even before it could hit the floors. Directed by Soundarya Rajnikanth the movie scripted by K S Ravikumar is reportedly featuring a host of established actors and actresses. Kochadayaan movie team has approached Prithviraj to do a key role in the movie with Sneha but too early for a word of finalization.

Mollywood star Prithviraj, the actress' co-star in Aiyya, finds people in Bollywood a lot more passionate about work

Though working in Bollywood has always posed a few challenges to south Indian actors vying to break the B'town barrier, it looks like Mollywood superstar Prithviraj has fit in with ease.

The actor is currently in Mumbai filming with Rani Mukherjee for his Bollywood debut Aiyya, which is being produced by Anurag Kashyap. While the pretty woman had earlier said that "even though he is a Mollywood superstar, Prithviraj is just like one of us," the actor goes a step further to say, "I have never been on a more comfortable set since I began my career in the film industry 11 years ago."

He attributes this to the professional working environment in the Hindi film industry. "Everyone here is very passionate about the work they are doing," he says. Prithviraj is all praise for his co-star Rani in the offbeat feelgood flick that tells the love story between a Marathi woman and a Tamil painter.

"Rani's gone to great lengths to prepare for the character. It is almost intimidating. She's been preparing for almost a year and has even learnt Marathi just for role," says the actor. Aiyya also throws in another hurdle in the form of language as the film uses sync sound recording (the sound is recorded during the filming itself).

However, Prithvi, who also has a few Kollywood hits to his credit, is not perturbed with this technicality and says, "In a way, I'm more comfortable with Hindi as I can read and write the language, which is not the case in Tamil."

Talking about Anurag and director Sachin Kundalkar, Prithviraj describes them as "very passionate filmmakers." This film has been touted to be the first all-out commercial movie that Anurag has been part of and even though it's a light-hearted love story, the way it's executed is extremely different, claims the actor.

Though it could be a dream launch for the Mollywood superstar in Bollywood, he says he doesn't look at it that way. "For me, it's just another movie but in a different language. But I am extremely happy that Anurag and team spotted me even though I've not done anything noteworthy," he adds.

Prithvi's 'Aiyaa' Progressing

The shoot for the Prithviraj's first Hindi movie 'Aiyaa' is progressing at Mumbai. The movie which tells a different love story is directed by Marathi filmmaker Sachin Kundlkar. The movie narrates the story of an affair between a south Indian boy and an aged Marathi girl.

Prithviraj has started shooting for the movie after much practice sessions especially organised for him. Prithvi is said to be much excited about the role. The movie which will complete its shoot by month of January will get into theatres by March.

Prithviraj: What have I done to deserve all this?

There are loads of hate comments and videos posted on the Internet and also text messages ridiculing you. Does it bother you?

I have been hearing about it for a long time and I am used to it by now. But it hurts when your family is brought into it. They are not a part of this.

I don't know what I have done to deserve this. If there is some incident because of which all this is happening, I can apologise or do something.

It all started after your marriage, done without the knowledge of the media...

I don't know. I think the vehement attacks started happening much after that. This, I think, has started in the last two months and it seems well organised. I have nothing to say to them. It is very tempting to go and pursue a film career in another language.

I am an actor but also a human being. At the end of the day, I live my life, I have my family and my privacy. It wouldn't have affected me if I had actually done something wrong -- at least I don't think I've done anything wrong.

Eleven years in films is a long time. You start thinking that if this is what your 11 years have come to, it's not worth it. But then, had this so-called character assassination been for professional reasons then Indian Rupee would not have done well.

How did you play this rather deglamorised role in Indian Rupee, when you usually play a very different kind of role?

I don't create the characters. Once they have been created by the writers, the directors conceive them and the actors give them form.

How was it working with director Ranjith who gave you the first big hit in your career, Nandanam?

Ranjith knew exactly what he wanted and told me in the beginning that I should stop working out and put on more weight. He even threatened to postpone the shoot if I didn't have a paunch!

He knew how my character should look and behave. I had fun because it was one month's vacation for me. With Ranjith at the helm of affairs, you are free of care -- he even tells you how the character must think, walk and behave.

The credit for Indian Rupee should go to him, as it is completely his film.

Many people attributed the success of Indian Rupee to actor Thilakan, who did a fabulous role in it. What did you feel like then?

I don't mind. As long as people like the film, I am okay with it. I am claiming zero credit for the film.

How was it working with Thilakan?

I have worked with him before and he is a fantastic actor. What is more awe-inspiring is that at this age, with all the difficulties that he has, he rises above it all when he hears "Action!"

His passion for acting is amazing. He is one of those people who are simply irreplaceable. It's like, if Thilakan is not available, you restructure the character.

What went wrong with Tejabhai & Family?

The judgment went wrong. It happens with all actors and I take responsibility for its failure as I believed the film would do well.

What attracted you to Masters?

I really think it is a promising script. The film has a great cast and some well known names working as technicians. It is also good that someone like Sasikumar found the script good enough.

What's it like shooting for Aiyya, directed by Sachin Kundalkar, which marks your entry into Bollywood?

Besides the fact that I am speaking a different language, there is not much difference. I am playing a south Indian painter who is studying in an Arts College.

For an Anurag Kashyap production, this is a completely different film; it's a funny, romantic comedy but it's not the conventional Bollywood love story.

How is it working with Rani Mukerji?

She is amazingly well prepared for the film. In the sense that she can now actually speak Marathi though she doesn't speak Marathi in the film. She plays a Maharashtrian girl and to get the texture right, she has learnt the language.

She really makes an effort to make sure that everyone else is comfortable. She identifies with the fact that I am new to that industry and has been really kind and helpful. It is really heartening to see the respect that they give you.

‘Masters,' starring Prithviraj and Sasikumar, is an investigative thriller that is crammed with twists and turns.

Inside a classroom at St. Berchman's College in Changanacherry, two friends are revisiting their good old days in the college. It's a scene for director Johnny Antony's ‘Masters,' which has Prithviraj and Tamil actor-director Sasikumar in the lead.

“ASP Sreeramakrishnan (Prithviraj) and journalist Milan Paul (Sasikumar) were classmates in this college, and the two have remained friends ever since. Sreeramakrishnan requests his friend to use his journalistic contacts to help him out with an investigation. So they join hands against a social issue that is relevant today. The movie chronicles their efforts and struggles in this regard,” says Johnny Antony, who has directed light-hearted entertainers such as ‘CID Moosa,' ‘Kochi Rajavu,' ‘Thuruppugulan,' and so on.

Serious theme

“‘Masters' is not a comedy. It's a serious story and it's being dealt with the kind of seriousness that the story demands,” adds Johnny. Piaa Bajpai, who was recently seen in the super hit Tamil film ‘Ko,' and Ananya are the heroines.

During a break, Prithviraj talks about the movie and his role: “I really think it is a promising script, and it is quite unlike the usual investigative thrillers –whodunits which begin with a crime and ends with the wrongdoers brought to book. In ‘Masters' there are so many leads going in lots of different directions and the answers to those questions is the climax of the film. Also, beneath all the investigation, suspense, and crime, it is an interesting film on relationships and friendship.”

The actor has also started shooting for his maiden Bollywood film ‘Aiyya,' an Anurag Kashyap production directed by Sachin Kundalkar, which has Rani Mukherji as the heroine.

Cinematographer Madhu Neelakantan gives instructions to his assistants as they get ready for a shot, with the camera atop a trolley. After a quick rehearsal, Sasikumar delivers some lengthy lines in Malayalam with remarkable ease. Meanwhile, director Blessy drops in for a chat, and spends some time exchanging pleasantries with the cast and crew.

On choosing Sasikumar for the film Johnny says: “It was the look, especially the fire in Sasikumar's eyes, that suited the character of the journalist and prompted me to sign him for the role.” Sasikumar is all smiles as he listens to Jonny and adds: “I was busy shooting for director Samuthirakani's ‘Poraali,' when this character was narrated to me and I thought it was well written. I am quite overwhelmed by the appreciation that my films have received in Kerala in the past, especially ‘Subramaniapuram.' For me, Malayalam films have always been a source of inspiration.” Sasikumar has directed and acted in ‘Subramaniapuram,' directed ‘Easan,' produced ‘Pasanga,' and acted in ‘Nadodigal.'

Trisha's exit sees Shriya's entry in 'Hero'

We are talking about the upcoming Prithviraj film 'Hero' in Malayalam. The film which sees Deepan calling the shots was supposed to take off with Mollywood heartthrob Prithviraj and Trisha as his heroine. It was rumored to be Trisha's official entry as heroine into the Malayalam film industry.

Now there are reports flowing in from the Malayalam film circles that Trisha would not be available to shoot for this film due to lack of dates. The director, who saw a tight corner cornering him, seems to have approached Shriya Saran who is believed to have happily nodded her "yes" to the project after listening to the script. Deepan, the director of this film has confirmed Shriya's presence in the film.

With 'Hero' in her kitty this will be Shriya's third film in Malayalam.

Sources close to this film's unit also reveal that Tamil hero Srikanth too would be playing a prominent role in this film. Nedumudi Venu, 'Thalaivaasal' Vijay, 'Guinness' Pakkru and Anil Murali too would be seen essaying pivotal roles in 'Hero.' According to sources, in the song one can see Rani wearing navvari - the traditional nine-yard saree, the nose ring called nathni and other accessories that traditional lavani dancers wear.

Both Vaibhavi and Rani are said to be quite excited over the number. While they are taking notes by watching popular lavani numbers, Rani is taking a step ahead and going to meet some professional dancers to learn the dance in detail. Besides, the director shared to sources that the actress has also done a couple of workshops to learn the language and mannerisms of playing a Maharashtrian girl in the film.

Sources added that since Sachin Kundalkar is a Maharashtrian he wants to present the lavani number in an authentic manner.

'Aiyya' is the launch pad for South actor Prithviraj in Bollywood who stars opposite Rani in this one.

കൊല്‍ക്കത്ത: പതിനേഴാമത് കൊല്‍ക്കത്ത അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര ചലച്ചിത്രമേളയില്‍ ശങ്കര്‍ രാമകൃഷ്ണന്‍ തിരക്കഥയെഴുതി സന്തോഷ് ശിവന്‍ സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത് പൃഥ്വിരാജ് നായകനായ 'ഉറുമി' പ്രദര്‍ശിപ്പിച്ചു. നന്ദന്‍ ഫിലിം കോംപ്ലക്‌സിലെ പ്രധാന വേദിയില്‍ പ്രദര്‍ശിപ്പിച്ച ഉറുമി മികച്ച പ്രേക്ഷകാഭിപ്രായം നേടി. ഉറുമിയുടെ ശില്‍പ്പികളിലൊരാളായ ശങ്കര്‍ രാമകൃഷ്ണന്റെ സാന്നിധ്യവും മേളയിലുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. പ്രദര്‍ശനത്തിന് മുമ്പ് ശങ്കര്‍ രാമകൃഷ്ണന്‍ ചിത്രത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് സംസാരിച്ചു. അധിനിവേശത്തിന്റെ മറന്നുപോയ അധ്യായങ്ങളുടെ ഒരു പുനര്‍വായന സാധ്യമാക്കുകയായിരുന്നു ഉറുമിയെന്ന് ശങ്കര്‍ രാമകൃഷ്ണന്‍ പറഞ്ഞു.

അധിനിവേശത്തിനെതിരായ ഒരു ജനതയുടെ വീറും വാശിയുമാര്‍ന്ന പോരാട്ടത്തിന്റെ പുനര്‍ജനിയെ വര്‍ത്തമാനകാലവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെടുത്താന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുന്ന രാമകൃഷ്ണനെ അഭിനന്ദിക്കാന്‍ സിനിമാലോകത്തെ പ്രശസ്തര്‍ക്ക് പുറമ സിനിമാ പ്രേമികളായ സാധാരണ ജനങ്ങളും പുറത്ത് കാത്തുനില്‍ക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. മലയാളത്തിന്റെ യശസ്സ് ഉയര്‍ത്തിപ്പിടിക്കാന്‍ അണിയറ പ്രവര്‍ത്തകര്‍ക്ക് കഴിഞ്ഞുവെന്നതിന്റെ സൂചകമായി പ്രദര്‍ശനത്തിനുശേഷം ഹാളിനു പുറത്ത് തിങ്ങി കൂടിയവരുടെ പ്രശംസാ വചനങ്ങള്‍.

നവംബര്‍ 10 നാരംഭിച്ച് എട്ട് ദിവസം നീണ്ടുനിന്ന മേള 17 നാണ് സമാപിച്ചത്. നവംബര്‍ 16 നായിരുന്നു ഉറുമിയുടെ പ്രദര്‍ശനം. ഉറുമിയടക്കം മൂന്ന് മലയാള സിനിമകളാണ് മേളയിലിടം നേടിയത്. ദേശീയ അവാര്‍ഡ് നേടിയ 'ആദാമിന്റെ മകന്‍ അബു', വിപിന്‍ വിജയ് സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത ചിത്രസൂത്രം എന്നിവയാണ് പ്രദര്‍ശിപ്പിച്ച മറ്റ് ചിത്രങ്ങള്‍. മൂന്നും മികച്ച പ്രേക്ഷക ശ്രദ്ധനേടി. 50 രാജ്യങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നായി 150 ചിത്രങ്ങളാണ് മേളയില്‍ പ്രദര്‍ശിപ്പിച്ചത്.

ബംഗാളിലെ ഭരണമാറ്റത്തിന് ശേഷം നടക്കുന്ന ആദ്യത്തെ ചലച്ചിത്രമേളയിലും പരിവര്‍ത്തനത്തിന്റെ കാറ്റ് വീശിയിരുന്നു. ഇത്തവണ ബോളിവുഡിലെ ജനപ്രിയ താരങ്ങളായിരുന്നു ചലച്ചിത്രമേളയിലെ പ്രധാന ആകര്‍ഷണം. ഷാരുഖ് ഖാനും ഷര്‍മിള ടാഗോറുമായിരുന്നു മേള ഉദ്ഘാടനം ചെയ്തത്. 1995 മുതല്‍ ആരംഭിച്ച കൊല്‍ക്കത്ത മേളയിലെ സ്ഥിരം സാന്നിധ്യവും സംഘാടകരില്‍ പ്രമുഖനുമായിരുന്ന മുന്‍ മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി ബുദ്ധദേബ് ഭട്ടാചാര്യ മേളയ്ക്ക് ഇത്തവണ എത്താതിരുന്നതും ശ്രദ്ധേയമായി.

ഉദ്ഘാടന ചടങ്ങ് കൊല്‍ക്കത്തയുടെ സാംസ്‌കാരിക കേന്ദ്രമെന്ന് വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കാവുന്ന നന്ദന്‍ കോംപ്ലക്‌സില്‍ നിന്നും മാറ്റി 12000 പേര്‍ക്ക് ഇരിക്കാവുന്ന നേതാജി ഇന്‍ഡോര്‍ സ്‌റ്റേഡിയത്തിലേക്ക് മാറ്റിയതും ഫ്രഞ്ച് ഡയറക്ടര്‍ ജീന്‍ ലുക്ക് ഗോദാര്‍ദിന്റെ 'ഫിലിം സോഷ്യലിസം', ഹംഗേറിയന്‍ ഡയറക്ടര്‍ ബേല റ്റാറിന്റെ 'ദി ട്യൂറിന്‍ ഹോര്‍സ്' എന്നിവ ഇത്തവണത്തെ മേളയില്‍ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കപ്പെട്ട സിനിമകളാണ്.
